Weber Q Series Grill
The Weber’s Q series started out as small, portable, liquid propane gas grills. The “Baby Q,” as it is referred to by many of its owners, was first launched in 2003. Because of its portability, it became a popular grill for tailgating, camping, picnics, and beach-going. The compact size allows these grills to make travel easy and fit easily in most Recreational Vehicles “basement” storage areas. They may be used as a tabletop grill or mounted its own foldout stand.
As a result of the popularity of the “Baby Q,” Weber introduced two larger grills. The still very portable Q2000 series and the not so much portable Q3000 series.
No matter which series grill you choose, each Q grill has the following in common:
- Cast-aluminum bodies
- Glass-reinforced nylon frames
- Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates
- Gas models are equipped with long-lasting stainless steel burners
- All gas models are equipped with the same regulator, Weber’s Infinite Control burner valve
- Electric models have 6 foot grounded cords
- Each has easy remove and clean drip pans with a disposable liner
The “Qs” also comes with Weber’s outstanding warranty:
The warranty on the cast aluminum body and Thermoset/Thermoplastic parts is 5 years but does not include fading or discoloration. Warranties on all other parts are for 2 years, which is more than enough time to work out any defects you may encounter.
Although Weber’s quality and service usually justify their higher prices, there are a lot of mid and large size economy grills in the Q series price range. These small to compact cookers are fun and functional with an appealing, modern look.
Reviews
While the reviews for all of the Q series grills are 83% to 92% positive there were some negative reviews. A majority of the complaints were that the grills were not getting hot enough. This is believed to be caused by a clogged burner tube, an undersized burner, or a faulty gas regulator. The regulator is covered in the warranty so it is an easy fix. This series of grills do not come with Weber’s “Flavorizer Bars” so the burner tubes can clog from food drippings. Proper cleaning prior to or after grill use will help solve this problem. As far as the undersized burner it is a compromise that is made when purchasing a portable grill. However, if these grills are properly warmed up, the aluminum housing and cast-iron grates will compensate for the burner.
Let’s take a look at the Q1000 and Q2000 series grills
Q1000 & Q1200 gas grill
Being the smallest of the Q series gas grills, the Q1000 & Q1200 offers189 square inches of cooking surface, and a single stainless steel burner produces 8,500 BTU’s. Like all of the Q series grills, these grills have a coated cast-aluminum housing, cast-iron cooking grates with a porcelain-enameled coating, removable grease pans with disposable aluminum liners, electric ignition, and glass re-inforced nylon frames. The cast-aluminum housing and cast-iron grates hold and distribute even heat with the grates providing a good searing surface. The cooking grates are split giving this grill the ability to use the optional cast-iron griddle. These portable grills use disposable 14.1 or 16.4-ounce liquid propane cylinders. A 20-pound propane tank adaptor hose is available along with after-market hardware for connecting to a Recreational Vehicles onboard LP system.
The Q1000 is “Titanium” in color and has piezoelectric ignition. The newer Q1200 has a battery-operated ignition, a lid thermometer, fold-out side tables, and is blue/
These grills can be found starting at around $209.99 (Q1000)
Q2200 gas grill
The obvious difference between this grill and the Q1000 series grills is that it is larger. This grill has 280 square inches of cooking space and put out 12,000 BTUs. It comes with fold-out side tables and its lid is taller than the Q1000 and Q1200. The taller lid gives you the ability to cook roasts, ribs, and even a whole chicken. All the other features are the same as the Q1000 series.
The Q2200 is “Titanium” in color and has piezoelectric ignition, it has a built-in hood/lid thermometer and electric ignition.
This grill can be found starting at around $319.99 (Q2200)
Q1400 and Q2400 Electric Grills
Other than being electric and being equipped with 1560 watt cooking elements, instead of gas burners, these grills are identical to its Q1000 series and Q2000 series brothers. These grills also are equipped with a starter button instead of an ignition system. The Q1400 is the same size as the Q1000 and the Q2400 is the same size as the Q2200.
These electric grills are more expensive than gas grills and can be found starting at around $329.00 (Q1400) and $42900 (Q2400),
These grills are very strong and sturdy and have very few items that may rust. If needed replacement parts are readily available. Weber offers several accessory items for the Q series grill. They include; a portable cart/stand, a cover, cast-iron griddles, a 6-foot adaptor hose, disposable aluminum drips pans, stainless steel toolset, a grill handle light, and various cleaning supplies. Camco also offers a propane brass tee with a 12-foot hose giving the ability to connect the grill to a Recreational Vehicles on-board liquid propane tank.
